Fish named State Wrestler of the Year
Hand senior Derek Fish (145 lbs.) was named the wrestler of the year at the Connecticut High School Coaches Association’s 2008 All-State banquet on March 16. Fish (32-1) became the first Hand wrestler in 16 years to win a New England championship. He also captured the State Open and won his second straight Class L title.

HAND CAPTURES FIRST SCC TITLE SINCE 1998

Six Tigers earn Individual Titles

Hand captured its first SCC wrestling title since 1998 with a solid team effort at the 2006 SCC Wrestling Championships at Cheshire High School.  Six Tigers earned individual titles, including senior Jay Mahoney (112 lbs.) who recorded his third straight title.  In addition, Xavier's John Holzinger (160 lbs.) also earned his third consecutive SCC title.

SCC WRESTLING WILL COMPETE IN ONE DIVISION IN 2005-06

The SCC has moved back to a one-division set-up after last year's two-division format. The change was dictated because the SCC added New Haven wrestling (a co-op program), giving it an odd number of schools participating.

2004-05 Recap

SCC PERFORMERS WIN SIX INDIVIDUAL TITLES
2/20/05 -- Six SCC wrestlers captured titles in the various state class meets, held on Saturday at different locations.  Click here for complete results.  In Class S, Thomas Izzo (Derby) captured the 275-pound weight class with a 3-0 decision over Thomas Drohan (Nonnewaug).  In Class M, two wrestlers earned state titles. In the 103-pound weight class, Hand's Jay Mahoney captured the title with a convincing 10-0 decision over Andrew Blain (Windham). Foran's Jared Czarneski won the 140-pound class, earning a 13-4 decision over Mike Karpman (RHAM).   In Class L, East Haven's Justin Dodge continued where he left off last week at the SCC Championships with a state title in the 145-pound class. Dodge earned a 3-0 decision over Andrew Brown (Ledyard) in the final. In Class LL, Fairfield Prep's David Bernstein captured the 215-pound title, defeating Danbury's Chase DeCarlo with a 12-2 major decision.

AMITY WINS SECOND STRAIGHT SCC WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP
2/14/05 -- Amity captured its second straight SCC Wrestling Championship, winning the 2005 team title with 166 points. The Spartans finished ahead of Hand (148) and Cheshire (113). Three Amity performers won individual weight class titles, led by Lou Cofrancesco (135 pounds). Jake Spencer (152) and D.J. Lombardo (171) also captured titles. In all, six Spartans reached the finals of their respective weight classes.   East Haven's Justin Dodge, who won the 145-pound class title, was named as the Tournament's Most Outstanding Performer.
