SCC at the CIAC State Open
2/20/05 -- Several SCC student-athletes and teams had productive showings at the CIAC Girls Indoor Track State Open, which was held at the New Haven Athletic Center.

Three SCC member-schools - Hillhouse, Career and Amity - finished fourth, fifth, and sixth, respectively.

Career's Nastasha Harvey had a productive day - winning the long jump (19-01.25) while finishing third in the 55 meter hurdles (8.37 seconds). She was also a member of the Panthers' winning 4 x 200 relay squad with Michelle Johnson, Lauren Williams, and Siara Johnson.


Three SCC Schools wins CIAC State Titles
2/14/05 -- The Southern Connecticut Conference had yet another productive showing at the CIAC Indoor Track Class Championships, held Thursday-Saturday (February 10-12, 2005) at the New Haven Athletic Center.

In total, SCC schools won four state titles (3 girls, 1 boys). Amity (LL), Hillhouse (L), and Career (S) won titles in the girls competition, while Amity boys took home the LL title. ). It was the first time since 2002 (Sheehan, Class S) that a SCC school won an indoor track state championship. Since 1994-95, SCC teams have now won 26 indoor track titles (15 girls, 11 boys).

Class LL Girls
Amity (73.50) narrowly defeated Glastonbury (71.5) in the Class LL girls meet. Other SCC teams competing included Hamden (4th place, 38 points), Wilbur Cross (5th place, 30) and Shelton (17th place, 4).

Individually, Khabria Hundley (Hamden) won the 55 meters (7.31 seconds), while Amity's Celia Keniry captured the high jump (5-00).

Three SCC relay teams also won event titles. The Wilbur Cross 4 x 400 relay team (Shaquanna Martindale, Mahogany Howard, Ashley Velazquez, and Amber Edwards) won in 4:12.81. Amity's 4 x 800 unit (Sonia Haerizadeh, Joanna Cambria, Judith Buechel, and Hayley Percy) emerged victorious in 9:50.30, while Spartan teammates (LeeAnn Iassogna, Tatiana Kline, Katie Yanagiaswa, and Kara Lightowler) won the Sprint Medley Relay (4:24.89).

Class L Girls
Hillhouse captured the Class L title with 54 points, just ahead of East Lyme (51) and Ridgefield (48). It was the fifth straight year the Hillhouse girls team has captured an indoor state title.

Other SCC teams included Branford (12th place, 15 points), Mercy (14th place, 12 points), and Lyman Hall (22nd, 3 points).

Individually, Hillhouse's Kelly Libert won the 600 meters (1:37.45), while the Academics' 4 x 200 and 4 x 400 relay teams both emerged victories. Shaiqua Burgess, Ann Marie Clarke, Irene Johnson and Shelayna Morgan comprised the 4 x 200 squad (1:49.95), while Tiffany Bromfield, Asia Taylor, Tamika Brock, and Libert formed the 4 x 400 team (4:10.82).

Class M Girls
In the Class M meet, North Haven finished fifth with 29 points, while Guilford (8th, 21 points), Hand (13th, 14 points) and Sacred Heart (23rd, 1.3 points) also scored points. There were two SCC individual winners - Guilford's Becca Krumholz (3200 meters, 11:47.92) and North Haven's Magdaline Lawhorn (Shot Put, 36-03).

Class S Girls
Career captured the Class S girls title for the second consecutive year. The Panthers record 49 points just ahead of Old Saybrook and East Catholic (40).

Career senior Natasha Harvey continued her fine indoor season by capturing the titles in the 55-meter hurdles (meet-record 8.22) and long jump (meet record 19-0.5) and was a member of the Panthers' victorious 4 x 200 relay team (meet-record 1:46.95) with Lauren Williams, Siara Johnson and Michelle Johnson.


Amity Captures 2005 SCC Girls Indoor Track Championship
2/3/05 -- Amity captured its second straight SCC Girls Indoor Track title with an outstanding team effort. The event took place at the New Haven Athletic Center. The Lady Spartans finished with 87 points, placing ahead of Hillhouse (64), Hamden (56), and Career (47).

Four Amity entries earned first-place finishes at the event - Sonia Haerizadeh (1,600 meters - 5:16.30) and Celia Keniry (High Jump, 5-2) each won their event, while the Spartans' 4 x 800 (Haerizadeh, Joanna Cambria, Judith Buechel, Hayley Percy) and Sprint Medley (LeeAnn Iassogna, Tatiana Kline, Katie Yanagisawa, Erin Bellis) relay teams with victorious.

Hillhouse junior Kelly Libert was named as the meet's most outstanding performer. Libert won two events - 300 and 600 meters - and was the anchor of the Academics' victorious 4 x 400 relay squad.
