The New Haven County Cutters will recognize longtime New Haven sports advocate Bill O'Brien during the team's doubleheader against the Can-Am League's Grays on July 26. There will be a ceremony between the two games at historic Yale Field.
"We wanted to do this because Bill has been such a strong supporter of sports, including the Cutters," said General Manager Marie Heikkinen-Webb.
Fans of New Haven area athletics should be familiar with O'Brien's contributions. He has spent much of his adult life coordinating, chairing or fund-raising for various athletic endeavors in the region, including spending 12 years as the chairman of the Greater New Haven Chamber of Commerce Sports Council. In 2002 he was named the New Haven Register Sports Person of the Year for his ongoing efforts within the sporting community. He was commissioner of the Southern Connecticut Conference, one of the premier high school conferences in the state, for the first decade after the inception of the league in 1994.
O'Brien is president of the New Haven chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame, runs the annual Hall of Fame classic between high school gridders from New Haven and Fairfield Counties and has been a member of the Walter Camp Football Foundation for 33 years. O'Brien and his wife, Maureen, also are both active in Branford, where they have made their home since 1969.
The first game of the doubleheader will begin at 5:05. Tickets for Cutters games can be purchased online at www.Cuttersbaseball.com, by calling
